Franz Josef Hahn is a lawyer, consultant and re-insurance specialist, who set up FJ Hahn Management Consultants in Hong Kong early 2009.
He studied law at the University of Mayence his home country Germany and graduated in 1983. There, he gained his first experience as a young judge in the civil and criminal court. A bilateral exchange program of the Ministries of Justice of Germany and France gave him a chance to get familiar with the work within the Appeal court of France in Paris. In 1986 he did a MA in Government Administration in the University of Speyer in Germany. Before joining the reinsurance industry, Franz was working as a lawyer in both Germany and Montreal specialising in trade finance and bankruptcy. As a pastime from his legal studies Franz was also working as an electrician in the Theatre and Opera House of Mayence and organized a re-socialization group for young delinquents in the youth state prison of Hessen State, just opposite the river Rhine.
Now Franz Hahn leads an organization that acts as a specialized consultant for boards of directors or executive board operating in the insurance industry, seeking strategic advice on capital efficiency, start-up, turn-around and run-off situations. In addition, the company assists American and European organizations to successfully manage their business interests in Asia.
Franz acquired a wide knowledge of the re-insurance industry during his 22 years with the two market leaders in reinsurance Munich Re and Swiss Re including information on running a re- insurance company, how to risk manage against a variety of natural disasters, terrorism as well as pharmaceutical serial losses.
In line with the global nature of the industry he gained first-hand experience in a number of countries, including England, Germany, Italy, and USA. As a product development specialist he came to Hong Kong in 1989 to serve the Asian markets in building up accident, health, liability and motor insurance together with Asian insurance companies.
After spending two years in Switzerland, he returned to Hong Kong in 1997 to lead the regional development of Swiss Re. Amongst his achievements are the licensing of Swiss Re as one of the first reinsurers in China in 2002 and the development of Swiss Re as the leading reinsurer of Asia. He was elected to the Advisory Committee to the Financial Secretary in 2002 and supported the Hong Kong government until 2008.
Franz has made Hong Kong his home and is married with two children.
