We know change is difficult but it’s possible. It is demonstrated in Bangladesh, where life for millions of people is going to improve thanks to the support of the United Kingdom-funded, UNDP-supported Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction programme.
As in many parts of the world, poverty in the crowded urban centres of Bangladesh has reached very high levels that, added to poor sanitation and a highly competitive labour market, make the condition of life intolerable. Thankfully the programme for Poverty Reduction has been effective since 2007 in order to help 23 towns and cities, among which also the district of Narayanganj, that is located in the middle of Balgladesh.
The main purpose of the project is to lead funds and opportunities for the primary initiatives that local people themselves decide to plan, especially education, apprenticeships and job-training. Development in the hands of the poorest, this is the most important sign of transformation through the programme; it pulls for long-term action, but the communities decide the most urgent things to do during the whole process.
