Promotion of The Cultural Heritage of Himalayan Tribes

by Admin - 09/22/2009 16:25

The indigenous communities of the Himalayan region have distinguished themselves for their unique cultures and distinct identities, but nowadays the strong influence of western and urban culture is destroy them. This is why Pragya - a non-profit development organization with activities in India, Nepal and United Kingdom – is working to stimulate the right development of these vulnerable communities. Preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Himalayan ethnic minorities is the aim of Pragya project. First they have studied the historical and community-based culture of the tribes and then created new methods to revitalise and develop them through the education in the traditional language and arts within the Culture Promotion Centre and the Rural Museums managed by the community. The project is working with groups in six distinct bio-cultural zones and almost all villages in these regions are being collaborated intensively. Music and dance troupes have also been constituted to perform inside and outside their region at events and festivals and expert designers are trying to convey the disappearing handicrafts.
