Mission Statement

"I don't think I have the ability to shoulder a historic mission. I don't think much about what the future of folk dance will be or what I can do for it. All I am able to do is slow down its possible disappearance." Yang Liping

Background Information

Yang Liping, award winning director, dancer and China´s most famous choreographer is best known for her show “Dynamic Yunnan”. With the natural gift of dance and with no formal training, she entered the Xishuangbanna Song and Dance Troupe in the Yunnan province at thirteen years old. She captured the national stage when she won a dance competition 1986 with a piece, “Spirit of Peacock”, she choreographed and performed by herself. Since then, she has dedicated her work to revitalize traditional songs and dance. Currently, she is an instructor at the Central Ethnic Dance Troupe.

Activities of Organisation

Her performances integrate traditional folk songs and dances, stemming from her background as a native Bai, as well as other ethnic minorities within the Yunnan region. Yang Liping´s ongoing projects continue to preserve and promote traditional songs and dance, often traveling to remote regions within Yunnan to learn and engage in the local culture and in turn incorporating their elements into the performances. Her travels have also led to the discovery of nearly all her performers; similar to her own background, they are all native dancers with no formal training but contribute their own personal experiences and understandings of their own culture to the program. The performances itself are very organic, utilizing natural sounds such as the wind, stones and rivers, as well as traditional instruments and clothing from their region. Yang's acclaimed performances, Dynamic Yunnan and Sound of Yunnan, capture all these traditional elements of song and dance and are brought together to form a truly authentic experience.
