Tibetan Mastiff Rescue

Location: Deqen, Yunnan, China

Mission Statement

The China Exploration and Research Society (CERS) believe that the progressive and equitable conservation of nature should not be achieved at the expense of indigenous peoples. It is the aim of CERS to restore endangered species to their natural environment whilst also giving back to local people.

Activities of Organisation

CERS have established a controlled breeding program to maintain the true blood of the Tibetan Mastiff and preserve their ancient and unique gene pool. A kennel has been opened in Deqen county, Yunnan, at an altitude of 3,500 feet that keeps more than 15 pure-bred mastiffs. These dogs will serve as studs to preserve the gene pool. As these dogs breed their offspring will be systematically given to Tibetan families in order to repopulate the plateau with these majestic dogs.

Consensus Community Perspective

The Tibetan Mastiff project works to preserve traditional cultures by revitalizing the time-honored practice of keeping Tibetan Mastiffs. This provides recipient families of the project with a direct link to ancient customs of their culture whilst also serving the practical purpose of safekeeping. These outcomes parallel the aims of the Himalayan Consensus to promote traditional local customs within modern contexts.
