Background Information
Organization for Social Development Initiatives (OSDI) is a non governmental organization (NGO) working in the rural and poverty struck areas of Pakistan. OSDI considers sustainable development to be the only solution for the betterment of the society and the people of Pakistan. This will be achieved by instigating economic activity in the region, providing access to universal education and addressing all related issues contributing towards poverty in the communities. These steps will also help increase job opportunities for Pakistan's youth by using their skills in a constructive manner.
Activities of Organisation
OSDI currently operates in 15 villages throughout the countryside in Pakistan and has undertaken a number of projects, from providing water, medical facilities, access to education, and community organizational models. Efforts include Village Agriculture Projects which facilitate the use of traditional agricultural practices in ways that maximize productivity without harming the regions fragile environment the Live Stock Project, which helps farmers acquire and finance access to livestock, Livelihood Assistance Programs, which seek to develop new forms of sustainable livelihood. The organization also introduces new low-impact technologies like greenhouses that help raise agricultural productivity, and advocate for renewable fuels like solar, wind, and bio-gas.
Our organization is also involved in community development projects that reach into education, community discussions about infrastructure gaps, and access to utilities.
Consensus Community Perspective
OSDI works in rural communities throughout Pakistan to address the issues of poverty, under-education, and unequal-access to resources in the context of a developing nation. The group hopes to help communities, and especially youth, find a healthy and sustainable niche in their economic context without turning to destructive or illegal means of survival, which will ultimately harm all of humanity. “The Organization for Social Development Initiatives OSDI truly believes that all such social conflicts can be resolved by alleviating poverty in these areas and ensuring sustainable development so that the poor can bring themselves out of the poverty and find the means to live a life free from frustration and hopelessness” a goal which is in perfect resonance with the objectives of the Himalayan Consensus. By addressing poverty and introducing sustainable means of local development to farming communities, OSDI will ensure that these communities remain vital in the face of a rapidly changing global economic context, and are able to preserve their identities as they advance into a more unified and empowered future. By first providing basic access to health-care, water, and educational resources, and then, through its feasibility studies and agricultural development projects, OSDI is assuring that these communities will move into the 21st century without being traumatized by the machinery of modernization, and in so doing embodies the Himalayan Consensus.
